UPDATE: Inmate pronounced dead at hospital after Sussex 1 State Prison attack

UPDATE: 8:55 p.m.: WFXR News has just learned that as of 6:50 p.m. tonight, Sussex 1 State Prison offender Pakastan Algier Gary was pronounced dead at Southside Regional Medical Center.

The victim’s cellmate is a suspect in the incident. He has been identified as Frank Elmo Reid.

The previous release had mentioned that the victim was transported to VCU Medical Center; however, he was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center.


ORIGINAL STORY:

RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) – An in-cell attack occurred earlier this morning at Sussex State Prison in eastern Virginia.

According to a release, at approximately 10:33 a.m., a 45-year old Sussex 1 State Prison offender sustained life-threatening injuries in an apparent offender-on-offender fight.

The incident occurred inside of a cell where the victim’s cellmate is suspected as the attacker.

The victim was transported to the emergency room at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center.

The incident remains under investigation.
