AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — According to the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office, 18-year-old Justin Jay Sales has been arrested for shooting and killing 92-year-old Doris Puleio back in June.
Authorities were called to Bobwhite Road for reports of a shooting on June 25 around 11:40 at night.
That’s where Puleio was found dead, and her 74-year-old daughter, Trudy Goetz, was found injured.
The Sheriff’s Office says this is the only homicide the county has experienced this year.
“I think it’s shocking for any 90-year-old person to get killed in her home at nighttime, I think that’s very shocking,” said Sheriff Viar. “We don’t- we don’t have these kinds of things in Amherst County. And I’m proud [that] this is our only murder this year, and I hope it stays that way.”
Viar has not yet released a possible motive, specific details about the shooting, how investigators connected Sales to the crime, or how his department tracked him down at a house off Littleton Lane in Madison Heights.
Viar did, however, say there is no relation between Sales and either of the women, and that the injured woman is recovering.
Court documents show that Sales was charged with robbery and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in May of 2017. Records show he pleaded not guilty to both of those charges — and that the Commonwealth’s evidence was struck.
Court documents also show Sales lived on Earley Farm Road, not even a three mile drive from the murder scene on Bobwhite Road.
No one answered a knock on the door for comment.
Viar says members of his team worked several 16-18 hour days over the past two weeks, and that he’s thankful for the support he got from other departments.
