ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — You either love them or hate them but we’re gonna try to convince you to at least give them a try!

Ben Harder from Den Hill Farm and Fungi is here to give us All The Dirt on growing mushrooms! Harder says it’s easy to grow mushrooms from home, especially with a kit from Den Hill Farm and Fungi.

“All you have to do is open up one of these bags and expose it to oxygen and humidity by misting it and they immediately start pinning (the stage where mushrooms begin to fruit),” said Harder.

Harder says fell in love with mushrooms the moment he saw shitake mushrooms growing from a log (which is another way to grow mushrooms), “and it just blew my mind that they were making something out of nothing.”

Mushrooms are very diverse in how you cook them. Each variety has its own flavor and different textures. Harder suggests brushing them to clean them and keep them dry.

“You don’t want to get them wet since they’re 90% water,” explained Harder. You can cook them in butter, fry them, stir fry them, or even grill them.

Den Hill Farm and Fungi has two workshops coming up. The Oyster Bag Inoculation Workshop is Sunday, September 17th and the Shiitake Log Inoculation Workshop is Sunday, October 1st. You can learn more on their website.

You can also find Den Hill Farm and Fungi at the Blacksburg Farmers Market and the Grandin Farmers Market.
