Accidental 911 calls on the rise


With more smart devices capable of making 911 calls, at least one dispatch center in Southwest Virginia is reporting a rise in accidental 911 calls.

The 911 Emergency Communications manager in Danville told WFXR News that they have seen an increase in accidental calls.

More than 4,700 hangup calls were reported in Danville in 2018; 1,525 were logged as accidental calls.

Officials at Roanoke’s E-911 department reported a drop in accidental 911 calls.

Dispatchers in the Star City answered more than 177,000 calls in 2018; More than 14,000 of the calls were logged as accidental.

Officials at 911 centers in Roanoke, Danville and Lynchburg told WFXR News that they do not keep track of what devices the accidental 911 calls are made from.

Our sister station WCBD reported that dispatchers in Charleston County, South Carolina do keep track of how accidental calls are made.

Officials in South Carolina said hundreds of accidental calls were made from Apple Watches.

In the iPhone, there are two ways to trigger that SOS. Either press and hold the sleep button and one of the volume buttons. Or rapidly press the sleep button five times. You can disable that one, .by going through your settings…and opening the SOS emergency menu.
