18th annual Checkpoint Strikeforce Campaign to launch starting Thursday

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Starting on Thursday, local officials and law enforcement will enhance their efforts in monitoring roads across the Commonwealth to arrest drunk drivers and save lives, courtesy of Virginia’s 18th annual Checkpoint Strikeforce campaign.

The focus of the campaign is to visually increase the presence of law enforcement on area roadways in advance of the upcoming Labor Day holiday, which typically marks the end of the summer travel season.

Drivers can expect increase presence of local and state police on area and statewide roadways the next several weeks. According to Roanoke police, the time of year leading up to the Labor Day holiday is the time when drunk driving is the cause of nearly have of all crashes that kill young drivers
