LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Organizers say the 11th annual Get Downtown street festival on Main Street in Lynchburg on Friday had the biggest turnout yet.

Ashley Kershner, Executive Director of the Downtown Lynchburg Association, estimates more than 10,000 visitors stopped by, surpassing previous records.

“We’ve got all the same things that people love but a lot of new things,” she said. “We’ve got two great stages with entertainment tonight. We’ve got ax-throwing for the first time, which is awesome. This is the second year we’ve had a beer garden in the community market. We’ve got kids activities all throughout.”

“This is my first time here,” said Carly Brooks, who came from Amherst. “I’m excited. It seems like there’s a lot going on. It seems a lot of fun.”

People like Da’Quan Saunders-McNear, a student at Randolph College, come back year after year.

“The giveaways, always love those,” he said, “the music, and the food.”

“I’m excited to see all of the performers,” said Amherst County resident Mackenzie Parker. “My sister-in-law is performing tonight with one of the dance companies, so we’re excited to see her.”

For Kershner, it’s a chance to show visitors what Lynchburg has to offer.

“For some people, this is when they come down, downtown every year to see what’s new and what’s changing, so they’re going to discover new businesses, they’re going to discover new buildings they’ve never seen before.”

“It’s nice seeing all the vendors, like the locals, everybody coming together, so it’s been fun,” said Brooks.
