RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) — As the Martinsville Speedway celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, adding to the intrigue of race week is “Commonwealth Kid” Denny Hamlin, who arrives at the Half Mile of Mayhem with momentum from his win at Richmond.

The 41-year-old from Chesterfield took the checkered flag on Sunday, marking his first win of the 2022 season. In fact, it was the first time all year that Hamlin finished inside the top 10.

The victory also marked the first at his home track in six years. Now he hopes to ride that momentum into Martinsville, where victory was in his grasp last fall until he got spun out of the lead by Alex Bowman.

“I take a lot of pride in the way I approach short tracks and stuff. My way is sometimes antiquated at some tracks. I have to adapt,” Hamlin said. “Yeah, these types of tracks, I get really frustrated when we don’t run well at this type of racetrack because I feel like I can make a difference, I feel like I know the feel that I want to feel in the car.”

Hamlin is seeking his first win at Martinsville since 2015.
