UPDATE 1:28 P.M. HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Henry County Sheriff’s Office says a man has been charged with murder after the deadly stabbing of 47-year-old William Clay Rumley, from Martinsville.

According to deputies, on Sept 3, deputies were notified of a stabbing in the 2000 block of Rives Road. When officers arrived, they found Rumley with a stab wound to his neck in the Scrub Board Laundromat.

Rumley passed away at the scene.

As the investigation continued, investigators obtained security footage and were able to get a description of the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Kenneth Austin Tatum, from Martinsville.

A few hours later, Martinsville Police located Tatum on Fairy Street after allegedly being involved in a domestic altercation.

Tatum was arrested and charged with First-degree Murder.

He is being held without bond at the Henry County Adult Detention Center.

The incident remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the Henry County Sheriff’s Office at 276-638-8751 or Crimestoppers at 63-CRIME (632-7463). The Crimestoppers Program offers rewards of up to $2,500 for information related to the crime.

The nature of the crime and the substance of the information determined the amount of money received.



HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) –The Henry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly stabbing that occurred inside a laundromat on Sept. 3.

According to an interview with BTW21, Sheriff Wayne Davis said just after 1 a.m., deputies were notified of a stabbing in the 2000 block of Rives Road. Davis said when responding officers arrived, they found a man dead inside the laundromat.

At this point in the investigation, deputies believe the victim was inside washing clothes when a woman entered the laundromat.

Sheriff Davis told BTW21 that a second man entered the laundromat and allegedly began harassing the woman and trying to steal the woman’s phone.

According to BTW21, as the incident escalated, the victim attempted to intervene. However, while trying to defend the woman, the man allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed him. The suspect then fled the scene on foot.

As the investigation and search continued, BTW21 says the suspect was taken into custody a few hours later on Fairy Street.

Sheriff Davis said that the victim and woman had never met each other.
