LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – The Lynchburg Fire Marshal reports that an arson arrest has been made in Lynchburg after several brush fires occurred on March 1st.

According to the Fire Marshall, 51-year-old Mejia Garcia, who has no known address, was allegedly seen around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday near the intersection of Odd Fellows Road and Mayflower Drive using a cigarette or lighter to ignite a string of small brush fires.

Garcia has been arrested and charged with four counts of arson (Class 6 Felony) which is defined under Virginia Code 18.2-86 as “maliciously set fire to wood, fence, straw, grass or similar materials capable of spreading fire on land.” 

Little damage has been reported at this time, but the fires did threaten structures in the nearby area.
