UPDATE 3/23 at 5:58 p.m.– The Lynchburg Police Department says a teenager has passed away after a shooting occurred near the intersection of 16th Street and Taylor Street on March 23rd.

Around 1 p.m. on Thursday, officers responded to the 1100 block of 16th street after shots fired were reported. At the scene, crews found a car had crashed into a pole and a 16-year-old male was found inside with a gunshot wound. First responders immediately rushed the victim to the hospital where he passed away from his injuries.

As a precaution, the Dunbar Middle School and R. S. Payne Elementary School were placed on a brief lockdown. Once officers confirmed there was no threat to the public, the lockdown was lifted.

Appalachian Power is working to repair the damages to the pole and the area will be shut down until repairs are complete.

There are no suspects in custody at this time and the shooting remains under investigation.

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — The Lynchburg Police Department is currently on the scene of a shooting that occurred at 16th and Taylor Street on Thursday afternoon.

LPD tells WFXR News that the incident happened around 1 p.m. and a person was shot and taken to the hospital.

The road is currently closed and drivers are encouraged to seek alternative routes of travel.

The incident remains under investigation.
