HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Henry County Sheriff’s Office reports a man has been arrested for the murder of a Martinsville man back in November of 2022.

On November 27th, 43-year-old Andrae Lamont Matthews of Martinsville arrived at the SOVAH Health emergency room with multiple gunshot wounds. Matthews was treated in Martinsville and then air-lifted to a hospital in Roanoke for treatment, where he later died from his injuries.

Through the investigation, officers determined that an altercation occurred between Matthews and Daryl O’Brian Smith. Both parties were traveling in a vehicle through the Fieldale/Bassett area of Henry County, where Smith then allegedly shot Matthews multiple times.

The case crossed state boundaries when investigators located witnesses in Texas. After consultation with the Henry County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, the case was presented to a Henry County Grand Jury.

The Grand Jury returned indictments on Smith for Second Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. Smith is currently being held in the Henry County Adult Detention Center without bond.
