National Heimlich Maneuver Day with the American Red Cross

Living Local

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Each year on June 1 we recognize a life-saving technique called the Heimlich Maneuver. This first-aid procedure was discovered by American Doctor Henry Heimlich in 1974. The maneuver uses abdominal thrusts to force air from the lungs to help expels an object that is dislodged in someone’s windpipe — causing them to choke.

Each year, the American Red Cross reports over 3,000 deaths are caused by choking. As a way to help spread awareness, the Red Cross recognizes Heimlich Maneuver Day as a way to help save lives.
