Focusing in on the mental health of athletes

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR)– The world tuned in to cheer on their favorite teams and individual athletes as they competed in Tokyo. While the athletes just wrapped up the competition, one athlete took the spotlight. Simone Biles announced during the games that she would omit herself from several of the gymnastic events in order to focus on her mental health.

Dr. Scott Geller, a Virginia Tech psychology professor, shares the impact of athletic performance on mental health and why many athletes are now more comfortable talking about it after Biles’ announcement.
