Roanoke, Va. (WFXR) — The First Team Volkswagen construction project located at Peters Creek road in Roanoke is the first 2020 recipient of the Stormwater Clean Award. This award was presented by Roanoke County in conjunction with the county’s Contractor Appreciation Program.
You might be thinking, “what’s the Stormwater Clean Award?” The Stormwater Clean Award acknowledges land-disturbing contractors who conduct exemplary work within the County to protect its natural water resources.
First Team Volkswagen and its grading contractor, Jeff Holt of Holt, Inc., have taken the land-disturbing activities seriously on this project by properly installing and maintaining the required erosion and sediment controls and stormwater management measures shown on the approved plan. The project has remained in compliance throughout the construction process, which has helped to minimize the amount of sediment-laden stormwater runoff leaving the site.
What many don’t realize is that contractors’ compliance and maintenance on construction sites truly affect the waterways around us.
The water goes into an underground storm drainage pipe that goes directly to the nearest creek, river, or stream. It does not go to the treatment plant. That’s why we’re worried about it. That could be oil, could be fertilizer off your lawn, or sediment from the construction site, all pollutants.Cindy Linkenhoker. Stormwater Program Manager
All of Roanoke County‘s creeks are impaired for sediment, including the Roanoke river. The Roanoke river drains into Smith Mountain Lake.
This is why clean water and stormwater management is extremely important and why First Team’s dedication to upholding high standards should be acknowledged. The Facilities Director at First Team Auto Mall, Stephen Lowe says that he and his team take great pride in the appearance of their facilities and are honored to receive the award.
It’s a team effort like anything. You pick the right people to work with you whether it’s from your architectural firm all the way down to your subcontractors. You know, when you work together and get all the proper intel and everybody is on the same page, everything works out really well.Stephen Lowe, The Facilities Director at First Team Auto Mall
