Fashioning the Future: Taubman Museum of Art debuts Afrofuturism in Costume Design

Living Local

From films such as Black Panther and Coming to America, movies like these are generation-defining and the original costumes are iconic. Ruth E. Carter — Academy Award-winning costume designer — is behind these costumes. These works of art bring vibrancy, nuance, color, and texture to each of the culture-shifting characters. Carter’s work is on display at the Taubman Museum of Arts. Executive director at the Taubman Museum of Arts, Cindy Petersen, and personal curator for Ruth E. Carter, Julia Long discuss the exhibit: Afrofuturism in Costume Design and what sets Carter’s costumes apart from all other designers.
