Virginia Tech students have a personal connection to Relay for Life

American Cancer Society

On Friday, the Drill Field at Virginia Tech will be packed full of students with personal stories.  These stories motivate them to lace up their running shoes to help find a cure

“There’s live music, there’s food,”  said, Ryan Scott, Student and Relay for life participant.

“We also have silent disco which is my favorite event where you put headphones on you’re in your own world, nobody can hear what you are listening to,” said Virginia Tech Junior, Erin Guidry.

Relay for Life There will bring the entertainment and a sea of purple.  Guidry will walk with about seven thousand others on Drill Field, for a common cause.

“Remembering and honoring those who we are trying to support in this fight against cancer,” said Scott.

This is a fight, Guidry knows all to well.  “When I was 11 years old, my step-dad was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer and he went through a couple surgeries”.

She said her step-dad’s surgeries turned into many years of chemo. By Erin’s freshman year at Virginia Tech, life as she knew it would never be the same.

“He unfortunately passed away in March”

Three years later, Guidry says Relay for life has been the outlet in her grieving process.

“It was me coming together with all these other people who have similar experiences who all kind of knew how I was feeling, who have been there”.

Her adventurous and smart step -ad was a Virginia Tech Alumni and the reason she enrolled there.
He’s also the reason Erin will keep walking.

“Every single person has been affected by it and no matter how minor that effect may have been to how major it is such as losing a parent, you cant help but want to fight that because you never know it could be you next”.

The Virginia Tech Relay for Life starts on Friday at 5pm.
