Dream Job Alert! Views, Brews, and a Paid Position with Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company to Trek the Appalachian Trail!

Living Local

Roanoke, Va. (WFXR) — Wait, what! Yes, you read the title right! Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company is looking for a triple threat applicant to fill their newest position of Chief Hiking Officer.

Devils Backbone Brewing Company was founded in 2008. The brewery has been producing mouthwatering, complex craft beers in central Virginia for a little over a decade. The brewery’s original location is in Nelson County. Their Lexington, Virginia facility is where most of the brewery’s beers are born.

Devils Backbone Brewing Company’s Chief Operating Officer, Hayes Humphreys says the company’s location has given the brewery the opportunity to host many Appalachian Trail thru-hikers.

We host approximately 1,000 people, a little over 1,000 folks every year, who set up from Springer Mountain, Georgia, and walk all the way up to Maine. We are at just under halfway on the trail, around mile marker 842. A lot of people come off the trail and come spend time with us, come spend zero-day, recharge, eat some food, drink some beer, and tell their stories.

Hearing the hiker’s stories of adventure and self-reflection on the trail inspired the brewery’s team to create the Chief Hiking Officer position.

People know the Appalachian trail but I’m not sure the people really understand how challenging it is, how important it is, and so we wanted to find a way to both enable people to go do it because we hear all the time, “oh that’s on my bucket list, I would love to go hike the trail but, but, but…” so we’re trying to remove all the buts by making it a paid position at Devils backbone.

The Chief Hiking Officer will be outfitted with all the necessary gear for the trail, will receive a $20,000 stipend for their journey, and will be flown to the trailhead. There will be celebrations with brews along the way.

However, this position isn’t for the faint of heart, with 700 applications already received there will be stiff competition. Devils Backbone Brewing company is looking for someone with the perfect combination of experience, a champion for the Appalachian Trail.

Specifically, the things we’re looking for in a Chief Hiking Officer is somebody who has hiked before, has some sense of what they’re getting into and also can demonstrate that they think they’re going to be able to endure the journey for the course of six months from Georgia to Maine. In addition to that, that’s the actual hiking part, right, we need you to understand how to actually make the journey and make it in a responsible way. Beyond that, we need somebody that’s going to be excited about celebrating all the Appalachian Trail communities and sharing that with the world. We need somebody who is social and outgoing and really likes to meet all these people and also somebody who’s pretty savvy with technology and social media so they can capture all these interactions and share them out.”

Humphreys explains two reasons why he is stoked for this position.

The first is that the Appalachian Trail is truly an adventure. It’s one of the last great adventures in the world through undisturbed wilderness and the more that people understand what it is, are exposed to it, and understand how special it is, the more likely they are to protect it and take care of it in the future. When people don’t understand what something is they don’t take care of it and so by offering the opportunity to somebody to hike this trail and share it with more people, my hope is that there are more people that will care about protecting the Appalachian trail and preserving it for future generations. The second piece, I’ve just seen the transformation in people from when they start from to when they finish, and so the idea that we can help somebody take a break, slow down on the trail, and evaluate what’s important and what’s not in their lives is something that I would be really proud to be a part of, even for just one individual, because it really does change you and I think that’s really exciting.
