UVA alum Joe Bell’s historic run with New Zealand ends in PKs vs. host nation Japan

KASHIMA, Japan (WFXR) — University of Virginia graduate Joe Bell saw his historic run with New Zealand come to an end in the men’s soccer quarterfinals against host nation Japan.

The All Whites, in their first appearance at the knockout stage of an Olympics, lost in penalty kicks, 4-2, after a scoreless draw at Kashima Stadium on Saturday.

Japan will play Spain in the semifinals on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. local time (7 a.m. Eastern).
