TOKYO (WFXR) — Virginia Beach’s Justin Dowell finished eighth in the first-ever Olympic BMX freestyle event at Ariake Sports Park.

Dowell was unable to complete either of his two runs. He started strong in the first 30 seconds of his first run before failing to land properly after a maneuver, earning him a score of 44.60. Dowell then crashed early in his second run, scoring 31.60. The best of the two runs is counted toward the final standings.

Dowell said in an Instagram post after the event: “I crashed out on a run that I believe had a good chance on Gold. I went all in and unfortunately it didn’t work out. This will not stop me, this is just the end of this chapter. I WILL be back.”

Australian Logan Martin took the gold with a score of 93.30 from his first run. Daniel Dhers of Venezuela won silver while Great Britain’s Declan Brooks earned bronze.
