TOKYO (WFXR) — Though Puerto Rico didn’t record a single win in women’s basketball at the Tokyo Olympics, guard Jazmon Gwathmey is being optimistic about her experience and the team’s future.
The former James Madison star averaged 18 points through three games and played the most minutes of any player on the Puerto Rico roster, averaging 34.6 minutes per contest.
“Although the scores may have not shown it, we as a team grew. We battled and fought for each game,” Gwathmey said in an Instagram post after Puerto Rico was eliminated from competition. “Being able to represent a country that has been through so much and STILL finds a way to shine is a blessing in itself.”
After group play, Gwathmey ranked fourth in total and average points scored of everyone competing in Tokyo.
Fellow JMU grad Jackie Benitez saw action in two games but saw limited playing time.
