TOKYO (WFXR) — American Nick Mayhugh broke his own world record twice in one day en route to winning his first Paralympic gold medal. The former Radford soccer player ran a time of 10.95 in the final of the T37 100 meters.
Mayhugh got off to a quick start and surged to the front to beat the rest of the field, earning the United States its first track title at these Tokyo Paralympics.
Mayhugh became the first T37 runner to run under 11 seconds earlier in the day when he ran 10.97 in his preliminary heat.
The win solidifies a fast rise in the sport for Mayhugh, who only started training for the Paralympics less than two years ago when he made the switch from soccer to track.
The Northern Virginia native has an opportunity to win two more individual gold medals in Tokyo. Mayhugh will compete in the men’s 400m and 200m next week.
