Use these safety tips to help avoid a potential Christmas tree fire

Home for the Holidays

(WFXR) – Christmas is just days away.

As the holiday approaches, you should not let your guard down over the safety of your Christmas tree.

We love the sparkle of the lights and the glistening tinsel, but it’s still important not to create a huge fire hazard with your tree.

Lt. Zack Dunnigan with the Dublin Fire Department says whether you have a real or an artificial tree, there are some things you need to know.

  1. Be sure you have at least three feet between your tree and a heating source.
  2. For artificial trees, be sure to keep them watered.
  3. Don’t overload your lights. You should have no more than three strands of lights plugged into the wall.

But what happens if your tree catches fire?

Dunnigan says you should use your regular fire extinguisher to put the fire out.

Also, if you can, unplug the lights quickly and call 911.

One more tip to avoid a potential fire: unplug the lights from the tree when they are not in use.
