ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Gift-giving shouldn’t just be limited to friends and family.

That’s why Carilion is holding a special toy and clothing drive for patients in their Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Department.

“Kids in our unit hugely benefit from donated items. In addition to using toys as rewards for positive reinforcement, many of the kids simply don’t have access to needed clothing or comfort items that many think of as basics.”

Lisa Dishner, RN, Senior Director of Nursing for the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Medicine

In a normal year, the department treats around 500 kids who are age nine and above.

Currently, their game/clothing closet is depleted. The goal of the drive is to ensure that children and teens who are staying with them during the holidays, and throughout the year, have access to things that help them during their stay as well as beyond.

They are asking for the following items which can be gently used but are preferred to be new:

  • Board games (age nine and older)
  • UNO cards
  • Playing cards
  • Adult coloring books
  • Books for reading (age nine and older)
  • Nintendo DS consoles, games and chargers
  • Wireless speakers
  • Wireless radios
  • Headphones (wireless preferred)
  • Fidget toys
  • Stress balls
  • Wii games, controllers, console
  • DVD movies (age nine and older)
  • Underwear, socks, bras for male/female (ages nine and up – teen and adult sizes needed the most)
  • Pants (age nine and older – teen and adult sizes needed the most)
  • Stocking caps and gloves for male/female (ages nine and up – teen and adult sizes needed the most)

Donations may be dropped off weekdays through Dec. 24 from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the main lobby of the Carilion Clinic Rehab Building at 2017 South Jefferson Street – across from Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital at the corner of Jefferson and McClanahan Streets.

Parking may be found on McClanahan Street or in the Crystal Spring Parking Garage.

Masks are required when entering the building.

Tax-deductible gifts are also being taken. To contribute, click here to learn more. Designate your donation by selecting, “Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine” in the “Designation” drop-down menu.
