ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — ‘Tis the season for holiday traditions as “Fashions for Evergreens” — a beloved tree-decorating contest for the Roanoke Valley community — returns to decks the halls at The Hotel Roanoke.

In 2020, the Fashions for Evergreens event was conducted in a virtual manner due to coronavirus precautions.

This year, though, organizers say families are welcome to get into the holiday spirit by taking a self-guided tour through the hotel, taking festive portraits, and voting with their dollars for the best-dressed tree.

“While we were grateful to be able to at least hold Fashions for Evergreens virtually last year, we are excited to welcome back generations of Roanoke Valley residents and visitors throughout the state, country and world to visit the hotel and experience the holiday season,” said Brian Wells, general manager for The Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center. “Not only is it an opportunity to show off the hotel and spread holiday cheer, this important fundraiser is a huge benefit to our community of non-profit organizations.”

Before the pandemic, United Way of Roanoke Valley says Fashions for Evergreens generated $11,854 for the organization in 2019, which was an all-time high for fundraising.

Now, a total of 12 organizations and businesses are set to compete for the 2021 People’s Choice award through monetary votes, with the contest proceeds going toward United Way of Roanoke Valley.

“Visitors to the trees, either in-person or online, may only be donating a few dollars, but this event truly helps individuals and families in the Roanoke Valley,” said Alisha Childress, Vice President of Resource Development at United Way of Roanoke Valley. “Donations support programs that assist people right here in our own communities, with resources that meet their needs, including access to affordable low, or even no-cost childcare solutions. Ultimately, getting folks back to work will ensure our economy is strong.”

If you still aren’t ready to venture out into downtown Roanoke this holiday season, you can tour the trees from home through an online gallery and vote monetarily for your top choices among the 12 contestants, which range from elegant to outlandish designs.

The Fashions for Evergreens contest runs through New Year’s Day, when the winning tree will be selected through dollar vote counts.
