LYNCHBURG, Va (WFXR) — The holiday season is upon us, and many people are getting into the holiday spirit by decorating their Christmas trees and their homes. Local experts shared how you can stay fire-safe this year.

They say the most crucial step is not overloading your circuits by plugging several electrical devices into one outlet. Adding to that, being mindful of factors such as how much heat is coming off the wire, unusual noise, and the proximity of the electricity to highly flammable objects is important.

Chief of Brookeville Timberlake Volunteer Fire Department Christopher Harris adds that if you need to stay vigilant in maintaining your Christmas tree.

“If you use an actual real tree versus an artificial tree, making sure you continue to water the tree and don’t let it dry out. When the trees dry out, they burn extremely fast and hot,” said Chief Harris.

Local electrician Casey Mullins with Mullin Electrical LLC recommends inspecting your decorations before use, adding that something as simple as a loose connection to an outlet can be a danger.

“If you have any questionable decorations that are old or damaged, the chords look cracked, or anything like that — when in doubt throw it out,” said Mullins.

Experts also add that you can purchase surge protectors. They say if you have any concerns or doubts, contact your local electrician or fire expert with questions.
