Celebration of Lights returns to Lynchburg’s Riverside Park

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – The annual Celebration of Lights is returning to Riverside Park.

Lynchburg Parks & Recreation says the event is a free drive-through light display that is open nightly in December from 5 to 9 p.m.

A new display will be at the event this year. A life-size Santa’s sleigh will be lit up for guests.

Guests are encouraged to take pictures in the sleigh and post them to social media with the hashtag #LynchburgParksandRec.

Also, a few special events will take place during the Celebration of Lights.

On Dec. 3, pedestrians will be able to walk through the park and take pictures among the array of lights between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Vintage carolers, ice carving, and the Batter Bar Food Truck will also be on-site.

On Dec. 10-11, horse-drawn carriage rides from Lexington Carriage Company will be offered through the park for $6.00 per person. Kids age two and under will be free between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

A special mailbox will also be installed for children to put their letters to Santa which can be dropped off near the playground at Riverside Park anytime between Dec. 1 through Dec. 24.

If you would like to have a return letter sent to your child from Santa, please follow the directions below:

  • Have the child write a letter to Santa.
  • Have the child address an envelope to Santa, North Pole.
  • On the back of the child’s letter, the adult will write a personalized response to the child’s letter and sign it “From Santa.”
  • Address a separate, empty envelope with the name and home address of the child with a return address as Santa, North Pole. Do not seal the return envelope as they will place the child’s letter and your response into it. Ensure proper postage is attached to the envelope.
  • Place the child’s letter, your response ad the folded return envelope with postage into the child’s envelope addressed to Santa.
  • Drop the completed letter into Santa’s Mailbox near the playground at Riverside Park.
