BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech’s annual Baseball Night in Blacksburg will be happening virtually on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 4 p.m., with Hokie graduate and current Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager for the Tampa Bay Rays, Erik Neander, as guest speaker.
Neander is entering his fourth season as senior vice president of baseball operations and general manager of the Rays organization. He joined the organization in January 2007 as a baseball operations intern and was hired as a full-time employee in October 2007. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a bachelor’s degree in food, nutrition, and exercise. In 2019, he was named the Major League Baseball Executive of the Year by his fellow peers.
Tickets for the event start at $25 per person for the regular program. The night will include remarks from Virginia Tech director of athletics, Whit Babcock, and head coach, John Szefc. Those wishing to attend a special cocktail program with Neander, can buy a ticket for $35 and attend that program at 3:30 p.m.
Every year, Baseball Night in Blacksburg is held as a fundraiser for the Virginia Tech baseball program to improve different areas of their program. In the past few years, this fundraiser has supported the James C. Weaver Baseball Center, which is used by the team year-round, and improvements to the ballpark– like extensions to the dugouts.
The banquet has hosted a number of special guest speakers, including both Cal Ripken Jr., as well as his brother, Billy Ripken. Other esteemed guests include MLB players Mike Williams and Billy Wagner, along with Hokie Baseball alumni Franklin Stubbs, Brad Clontz and Wyatt Toregas.
