Voter registration numbers in Lynchburg plummet compared to 2016

Coronavirus

LYNCHBURG, Va (WFXR) — Voter registration numbers in Lynchburg are down significantly these past few months compared to the same time period in the last presidential election cycle.

According to data from the Lynchburg General Registrar’s office, between March and June of 2016, Lynchburg added 828 registered voters.

In those same months this year, Lynchburg only added 60 registered voters. That’s only seven percent of 2016’s growth.

“Four years ago, the political parties and a number of civic organizations were already out going door to door doing voter registrations,” said Patricia Bower, Chair of the Lynchburg Board of Elections, “and that’s just not happening this year because of the virus.”

Bower also pointed to DMV closures and the cancellations of events with voter registration tables as contributing factors, but she encourages eligible voters to register or update their addresses online by Oct. 13 to vote in November.
