Virginia health officials report 981 new COVID-19 cases while total deaths climb to 2,218 as of Sunday

RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) — The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 981 new COVID-19 cases and three new virus-related deaths as of Sunday morning, bringing the Commonwealth’s total coronavirus count up to 91,782 confirmed and probable diagnoses and 2,218 confirmed and probable fatalities.

Virginia health officials confirmed 88,324 cases and 2,108 deaths are related to the virus as of Sunday, Aug. 2. However, 3,458 cases and 110 deaths are still reported as “probable.”

According to VDH’s Sunday report, more than 5,600 COVID-19 cases are from the following localities in southwest and central Virginia:

  • Alleghany County: 56 cases, 5 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths
  • Amherst County: 114 cases and 6 hospitalizations
  • Appomattox County: 70 cases and 7 hospitalizations
  • Bath County: 4 cases
  • Bedford County: 299 cases, 12 hospitalizations, and 6 deaths
  • Bland County: 7 cases
  • Botetourt County: 188 cases, 15 hospitalizations, and 7 deaths
  • Buena Vista: 48 cases and 3 hospitalizations
  • Campbell County: 151 cases, 6 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths
  • Carroll County: 311 cases, 29 hospitalizations, and 14 deaths
  • Charlotte County: 49 cases and 4 hospitalizations
  • Covington: 12 cases
  • Craig County: 16 cases and 1 hospitalization
  • Danville: 330 cases, 38 hospitalizations, and 7 deaths
  • Floyd County: 37 cases, 2 hospitalizations, and 1 death
  • Franklin County: 160 cases, 8 hospitalizations, and 1 death
  • Galax: 331 cases, 37 hospitalizations, and 22 deaths
  • Giles County: 23 cases and 1 hospitalization
  • Grayson County: 130 cases, 8 hospitalizations, and 4 deaths
  • Halifax County: 137 cases, 5 hospitalizations, and 1 death
  • Henry County: 511 cases, 58 hospitalizations, and 6 deaths
  • Highland County: 3 cases
  • Lexington: 32 cases and 1 hospitalization
  • Lynchburg: 459 cases, 13 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths
  • Martinsville: 169 cases, 25 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths
  • Montgomery County: 280 cases, 16 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths
  • Nelson County: 34 cases
  • Patrick County: 115 cases, 24 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths
  • Pittsylvania County: 354 cases, 25 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths
  • Pulaski County: 74 cases, 9 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths
  • Radford: 26 cases and 2 hospitalizations
  • Roanoke City: 903 cases, 18 hospitalizations, and 11 deaths
  • Roanoke County: 447 cases, 13 hospitalizations, and 7 deaths
  • Rockbridge County: 68 cases and 1 hospitalization
  • Salem: 138 cases, 5 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths
  • Wythe County: 105 cases, 10 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths

Since Saturday, Aug. 1, VDH has reported 42 new cases in Roanoke City, 25 new cases in Pittsylvania County, 19 new cases and five new hospitalizations in Lynchburg, 16 new cases and two new hospitalizations in Danville, 10 new cases in Roanoke County, nine new cases and two new hospitalizations in Henry County, seven new cases in Salem, six new cases and two new hospitalizations in Amherst County, six new cases and four new hospitalizations in Bedford County, five new cases and one new hospitalization in Montgomery County, four new cases in Floyd County, four new cases in Franklin County, four new cases and one new hospitalization in Patrick County, three new cases in Botetourt County, three new cases in Carroll County, three new cases in Lexington, three new cases in Wythe County, two new cases and five new hospitalizations in Appomattox County, two new cases and one new hospitalization in Campbell County, two new cases in Halifax County, two new cases in Nelson County, two new cases in Rockbridge County, one new case in Buena Vista, one new case in Grayson County, one new case and one new hospitalization in Martinsville, and one new death in Galax.

The department has reportedly received 7,955 records of confirmed and probable virus-related hospitalizations across Virginia as of Sunday.
