MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WFXR) – Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) is preparing to welcome back students for Fall Semester, but this year, they faced a new challenge – to redesign the advising process before students begin the new semester.

Advisors and new committees teamed up to form a group the college president is calling “Safe Welcome Back” to develop a creative solution.

“First, we picked one of the largest spaces we have on campus so we can spread out our advising stations as much as possible. We’ll have enough room to be well over six feet apart.”

Dr. Virginia Jones, PHCC Dean of Student Services and Enrollment Services

The college is also deploying many other safety precautions including installing shields and hand sanitizer at advising stations and providing each student with their own pen and mask if they need one.

Students will be required to pre-register for their advising session as the college is offering six appointments at each thirty-minute interval during the day. Students can pre-register online at or call (276) 656-5482

The advising sessions will be available on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, July 21
    • from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 22
    • from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 29
    • from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Thursday, July 30
    • from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Advising days are open to both new and current students. For Fall Semester, PHCC will offer a variety of classes online and in-person. Safety measures will be in place across the campus during the semester to ensure that in-person classes are offered in the safest manner possible.
