Community members pitching in to feed those in need

Coronavirus

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Last week, Dana Lee Nicholas made meatloaf for the Lighthouse Community Center to serve to those in need.

“That was a little treacherous, making meatloaf for 55 people,” she said. Since then, The Lighthouse has had more mouths to feed. “Since the number went up to 70, the spaghetti and the noodles works a little bit better, so that’s what we’re doing. It’s really easy to do. Anybody can do it.”

She plans to pitch in with a home cooked meal every week to help out The Lighthouse.

“I know that they feed a lot of homeless people and that the restaurants are closing down.”

Restaurants are now takeout-only, and some of them are pitching in, too.

“Any way that we can help right now, we’ve got to do our part,” said Richard Leeming, owner of Spring House Restaurant.

He and his son have made about 1,000 meals and counting for The Lighthouse as well as some of their partner organizations in Lynchburg.

“The lines are growing downtown with The Lighthouse and with Salvation Army, Daily Bread, because of the fact that people are unemployed,” he said.

With fewer customers, they have both extra time and extra food.

“It has been a tremendous blessing for us,” said Tracey Dixon, the Executive Director of Lynchburg Daily Bread. “It’s been absolutely wonderful, although the circumstances are terrible. We really want our restaurant friends to hang in there as long as they can.”

In the last week, Daily Bread served more than 2,000 meals, which is almost double their normal demand.

Dixon says it’s been possible because of organizations like hers working together.

“One day I had over 2,000 eggs, and I was able to share that with our community partners. They have shared, The Lighthouse has shared hamburger buns with us and yogurt.”
