Buchanan Elementary student being treated for ‘probable coronavirus,’ classmates temporarily switching to remote learning, Botetourt County Schools says

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — On Monday, Botetourt County school officials notified members of the community of a student at Buchanan Elementary School receiving treatment for “probable coronavirus disease,” resulting in that student’s classmates to shift to remote learning temporarily.

Botetourt County Public Schools notified parents of the probable case via school messenger on Monday, Sept. 14.

School officials say students in this person’s class at Buchanan Elementary are required to temporarily transition to remote learning due to the possibility of close contacts within the classroom. According to the school district, the students in the impacted class will be allowed to return for in-person learning on Sept. 28, but only if they are symptom-free.

However, Buchanan Elementary School will remain open during this time, Botetourt County Public Schools says.

According to school officials, they are working alongside the Roanoke and Alleghany Health Department to identify any close contacts of the student in question in order to determine whether they might have been exposed to the virus. The health department will directly contact the parent of any potentially exposed child to offer guidelines on necessary actions, the school district says.

Meanwhile, other students at Buchanan Elementary School do not need to stay home or avoid activities at this time, according to Botetourt County Public Schools.

The school district says the areas impacted by the potential exposure were cleaned per protocol, which also involves using EPA-registered disinfectants.

Parents are asked to monitor their children — especially if they have underlying medical conditions — and the rest of their family for coronavirus symptoms. In addition, family members are encouraged to promote healthy behavior and other practices shared by health officials amid the pandemic, such as hand washing and facial coverings.
