MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WFXR) Robynn Jaymes has been a huge part of broadcast radio in the southwest Virginia area for many years. She got her start at Liberty University with WLBU during her sophomore year between 1980-81, she then started her first paid radio job with a Lynchburg radio station at the time was known as WCNV in 1983, which was later bought and the call letters changed to WYYD.
“I started with turntables, you know and here every thing is hard-drive and computer. It’s just so cool to have had that in my lifetime and to see the progress that we’ve made… and for me the advancement of music, I love music, just love all kinds of music.”Robynn Jaymes – Midday Air Personality – WZBB B-99.9 FM
Robynn wasn’t a huge country music fan when she started her career in radio she tells us.
“You know I did not like country music at the time that I took the job [laughs]… I grew up in a house with a family that listened to everything, Dad listened to country, Mom listened to Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Johnny Rivers… brothers listened to Boston, Foreigner, Journey. Sister listened to the Beatles, So I got this really well-versed music.”Robynn Jaymes – Midday Air Personality – WZBB B-99.9 FM
In 2001 Robynn Jaymes started working at Star Country in Roanoke than in 2011 would have to leave radio for 10 months while she was battling Pancreatitis, a battle she would fight for the next 9 years.
“The initial battle was life-threatening and changed my life. When I was driving yesterday I was thinking about that, and I just thought… How grateful I was to have been on the radio yesterday and have such a good time because I know it can change in a minute. It’s happened to me.”Robynn Jaymes – Midday Air Personality – WZBB B-99.9 FM
Robynn did make her return to the radio working part-time on weekends after being away for 10 months, but later in March of 2020 when COVID-19 hit she lost her job. Thinking her career may be over she gave it one last chance and reached out to a local country music station out of Martinsville, WZBB B-99.9
“Months went by and nothing… and then the owner called me in September and had me come down to meet him and talk and come to the station, I literally thought I was coming in here to do weekends. When I walked out he hired me to do 10 to 3 on Monday through Friday.”Robynn Jaymes – Midday Air Personality – WZBB B-99.9 FM
Robynn Jaymes uses the word grateful a lot when asked about this new opportunity, she says there really isn’t a word big enough to express how she feels.
“I get to do what I love again… and I’m so… I keep using the word grateful, there’s just not a big enough word. Because, Like I said earlier… I know it can be gone, I know it can be gone today, I know it can be gone tomorrow, but for today right now I get to do this.”Robynn Jaymes – Midday Air Personality – WZBB B-99.9 FM
Like Robynn mentioned you can catch her on air from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday through Friday on B-99.9 FM
