Local boy’s school business project helps to feed the homeless in Roanoke

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Last summer, when Joshua Elliott was six-years-old, he approached his mom about starting a lemonade stand to help feed the homeless. His mother, Charnika Elliott, was ecstatic about the idea.

Several events got in the way of getting around to that goal last summer, but things changed dramatically this summer. Schools had to shut down due to COVID-19, making it challenging for Charnika, a mother and educator, to plan out the rest of the school year.

“For school, we have a career week and the whole plan was to have our students create a business idea, but when the pandemic hit… COVID-19 came and we had to end school, we didn’t do it because we didn’t have career week. But, as an educator, as the administrator, as a teacher, I was like, ‘why should we restrict the projects that we had assigned, just because of the pandemic? Let’s still do it, but let’s be creative.'”

Now, at seven-years-old, Joshua set out to start his school project with one thing in mind: to do what he could to help those in need.

“It went better than I expected. It was great and I made a lot of money.”

With the money he raised, they were able to feed 60 people in downtown Roanoke.

“We just got, like, snacks, like Cheez-its and Nutra-grain bars and Slim-Jims and chips. Yeah, and sandwiches and waters.”
