The inpatient pharmacy at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (CRMH) now has two Sterile Compounding Robots. These robots are vital when making medications safe and without any contamination for patients at CRMH. Human interaction with medication can have a risk of contaminating the drugs being made, that is where these robots make all the difference.
“We prepare medications in an environment similar to an O.R. (operating room), our standards are similar to an O.R. environment. The robot is a self-enclosed HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filtered device where there is no human manipulation.” said Cheryl Boone, Pharmacy Admixture Manager.
Before having these devices CRMH has had to order these sterile mixtures from other sources. Having this new ability to mix compounds in house saves money and time. These robots are tools for CRMH’s inpatient pharmacy and are not replacing any employees.
The Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital IV room alone mixes up to 1,400 doses daily, making about 42,000 doses a month.
