ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The River’s Edge Park and Sports Complex are seeing some much-needed renovations to their fields, new tennis courts, and increased access to the Roanoke River Greenway.
This project was scheduled to be completed by June 7 in order to be ready in time for the Ironman Triathlon competitions, which ended up being canceled due to the pandemic.
“It has given us time to make sure that everything is perfect and exactly how we wanted it so that the public can enjoy it.”Stephanie Long – Marketing Coordinator / Roanoke Parks and Recreation
Many of the improvements have helped to make the park easier to access by car, bike, or on foot.
“So, a pain point for a lot of people was the Roanoke River Greenway is on the south side of the park, and we have this bridge and now we have a paved connector that takes you over here to Virginia Tech Carilion, Roanoke Memorial, as well as Blueway access.”Stephanie Long – Marketing Coordinator / Roanoke Parks and Recreation
Even though many events planned to take place this summer at River’s Edge Park faced coronavirus complications, many have said it was a very welcome sight to see these improvements.
“We try to play two to three times a week. We found that here at this park, it’s probably the nicest courts we’ve found.”Mike Benke – Visitor / River’s Edge Park
“I think, during the pandemic, this is one of the safest places to be. You get your fresh air, you get your piece of mind. You just come out and just do your thing.”Sidney Johnson – Visitor / Roanoke River Greenway
The Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department issued the following press release on Tuesday, July 7 about the opening of the park and its updated amenities:
