ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Recently Larry Bly and Larry Dowdy, two local radio icons, recently joined forces to create a podcast called Two Larry’s and a Mic. The podcast brings a combination of the two Larry’s years of radio and television experience to the mic, with tales of their experiences over the years.
Each podcast runs around 15 to 20 minutes long. The time is filled with trivia games and a “name that tune” segment covering Mo-town, ’60s and ’70s rock, disco, as well as the most recent podcast covering the British invasion.
“We have a plan usually of what era of music we’re going to listen to, whether it’s one-hit wonders, whether it’s the ’70s, whether it’s the British invasion. Then I always look to Larry for a radio or television tale some story he’s experienced or heard of.”Larry Dowdy – Co-host Two Larry’s and a Mic
“Because I’m old! I always like to tell people I can’t remember a joke for ten minutes, but I never forget a good story and I got hundreds of them.”Larry Bly – Co-host Two Larry’s and a Mic
Many in area will recognize Bly from the hit ’80s locally produced television show Cooking Cheap. The show was a bit ahead of its time by attempting to not hide the preparation that goes into cooking a recipe. They used common ingredients bought at area markets around Roanoke.
“The show took off and it first went statewide on PBS stations then it started some ad hoc east coast network that I never could quite understand and then the next thing you know it went nationwide.”Larry Bly – Co-host Two Larry’s and a Mic
In 1971, Bly left WWWW or W4 Quad radio in Detroit Michigan and came to the Roanoke area for a job at WROV.
“I fell in love with the Roanoke Valley it was just fabulous, and fell in love with ROV… which was a great radio station in its day and fell in with a bunch of very very talented people like Bart Prater and Dan Alexander and… it was just, it was magical. It really was.”Larry Bly – Co-host Two Larry’s and a Mic
Many in our area will also recognize Dowdy as a long-time Radio DJ host from many local stations such as WROV where he first met Bly.
“It was weekends it was overnight, but I was on the radio and I was going to be a senior in high school at Jefferson. So, I thought I was something but every Saturday morning the person who would relieve me at 6 a.m. was Larry Bly.”Larry Dowdy – Co-host Two Larry’s and a Mic
Both Bly and Dowdy say throughout their careers their first love is radio and music, and it shows in their podcast Two Larry’s and a Mic. From the wealth of detailed knowledge on many music genres and artists from over the past five decades, their love for being a radio DJ — or Disc Jockey — really comes through their podcast.
“We’re not doing it for money goodness knows, nor will we try to I can’t imagine. We’re just doing it because it’s a labor of love.”Larry Bly – Co-host Two Larry’s and a Mic
“…and so I did Newstalk for five and a half years before I decided it’s time to retire. But, I still have a thing for music, still love music and just doing the podcast with Larry, one, it’s a treat it’s a lot of fun and here we are today.”Larry Dowdy – Co-host Two Larry’s and a Mic
Two Larry’s and a Mic started in late August of this year. The team records an episode about every week or week and a half. If you’d like to find their podcast, you can find it on music streaming applications such as Apple, Google, Spotify, etc.
