ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (WFXR) – Today was a huge day for Goodwill Discovery Services of Rocky Mount. Many people in our area live with disabilities, and need a helping hand towards living a more independent life. One year ago it was decided that the facility in Rocky Mount desperately needed renovation. That’s when plans started and then the search for donors, with the help of an anonymous donor and The Knights of Columbus their goals and dreams were met.
“So… to see these new classrooms and everything new and purposed just for them, they were so excited. They love all the new things, the touchscreen computers, they love working with those. So, so many more opportunities that we never dreamt would be a possibility.”>Laura Dickerson – Regional Coordinator of Foundational Services / Goodwill
Today Goodwill held an open house, showing the public the new learning spaces, the new and very large kitchen, the sensory room to help calm nerves and decompress. Everything was in it’s right place to make it easier to teach and learn. Goodwill would like the donors to know how thankful they are with the new space, with new kitchen appliances, new touch screen desk top computers, new furniture throughout.
“This is our new kitchen, thanks to our anonymous donor that provided us all new appliances so we can come in and do some fun cooking classes, we can keep building on those life skills.”Laura Dickerson – Regional Coordinator of Foundational Services / Goodwill
Goodwill Discovery Services plans to hold more vocational skills and academics classes to help the people they serve to lead independent lives.
