BUCHANAN, Va. (WFXR) – The Buchanan Theatre has been a significant draw for businesses in the community.
The Buchanan Fountain and Grill is across the street from the theater. During the spring and early summer months, the restaurant usually sees more business as families are on summer break and people flock to the theater each weekend.
“…Normally on Fridays, Saturdays… we pair up with them and we try to do some specials for the Theatre. You know to draw them in before the movie.”Mark Marsh – Co-Owner / Buchanan Fountain and Grill
“We plan to open July 17th and we’re allowed to have 100 patrons according to the Governor’s guidelines at 50-percent, but we’re going to keep it at 50 to just make sure that everybody can be socially distanced.”Sharon Coleman – Manager / Buchanan Theatre
The theater originally planned to reopen Friday, July 10, but had to push back the opening date to Friday, July 17, due to volunteer shortages and additional cleaning.
If you’d like to volunteer your time at the Buchanan Theatre, have not traveled recently, and are not experiencing any symptoms of coronavirus, contact the Buchanan Theatre through their Facebook page or their website.
The theater asks that if you have been traveling through any COVID-19 hot spots, please wait up to two weeks before applying to volunteer. The safety of the other volunteers and the community is of the utmost concern.
The Town of Buchanan, like many small communities, has been hit hard by the economic effects of COVID-19. Some businesses closed their doors while others are just getting by, but things are looking up for this small town.
“Even though we were going through COVID, things weren’t down and out. The Town went through a Community Business Launch program, where we have had four to five businesses that have presented and will be reopening.”Harry Gleason – Community Development Planner / Town of Buchanan
These businesses include an expanding Bed and Breakfast, a coffee shop that will serve food, an ice cream parlor, and a dress shop.
Moving forward, the Town of Buchanan has an open house event planned to welcome the new businesses to the community. However, town officials are keeping an eye on COVID-19 and current restrictions in case the New Businesses Open House needs to be canceled.
