GLASGOW, Va. (WFXR) — The Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department is mourning the loss of a lifetime member and former chief, Roger Lee Bradley.
The fire department announced on its Facebook page, that Bradley passed away in his sleep on Thursday, Aug. 24. He was 85.
Bradley was born in Amherst County and moved to Rockbridge County when he was two years old. In 1957, he graduated from Natural Bridge High School and went on to serve in the Army for two years.
During his career, he worked at the Reynolds Gulf, which was later known as, the Chevron. There, he worked as a mechanic for more than 30 years. He played softball for the Gulf Station in the ’70s, became a member of the church softball league, and during his spare time was a coach for his son’s little league teams.
Bradley was also a deacon at the Glasgow Baptist Church and served on the Board of Trustees.
In the early 1960s, Bradley joined the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department, where he dedicated more than 59 years of service. In early 2023, he was presented with a plaque for his service by the fire department.
Keeping his hands tied to the community, Bradley served as a member of the Glasgow Town Council for more than 30 years and was a known face throughout the town.
The Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department said Bradley’s funeral will be held on Monday, Aug. 28 at the Harrison Funeral Home chapel. He will be buried at the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens.
