BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — For thirty years the Hand-in-Hand park in Blacksburg has been the playground for kids in the community. The wooden structure holds memories of joy and laughter for many children, but it is now getting a new look.
The playground sits on Turner Street in Municipal Park and was built in 1992 by Leathers and Associates. The company is now helping redesign the playground using new custom-designed modern materials. The Town of Blacksburg Parks and Recreation Director Dean Crane says the park will start being disassembled on Wednesday, March 1.
With feedback from over 600 community engagement surveys, the new design will feature benches, accessible wheelchair swings, a ship-swinging deck, a new playhouse near the entrance, and more. The redesign will turn the castle turrets green and the park sign will also be moved.
The Town of Blacksburg says the base of the playground will be woodchips to meet special needs guidelines. The town decided that wood chips are preferable to ensure a wider variety of playground equipment, the surface is smooth and is spun from the insides of trees.
