Kara Thompson joined the WFXR weather team in December 2018 as a weekend meteorologist.
Raised in Mechanicsville, VA Kara’s interest in meteorology stemmed from watching weather and tracking tropical storms in the Atlantic at a young age. She knew she wanted to be a meteorologist when she was in elementary school.
After high school, Kara left her hometown to pursue her dream. Kara received a bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Science from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. A few months later, she took her first broadcasting job as a weekend meteorologist and multimedia journalist at KLST in San Angelo, Texas. She spent more than a year in Texas before moving back to Virginia to work at WFXR.
She is excited to be back in the Commonwealth to forecast the weather in the Roanoke Valley and Southwest Virginia. When she isn’t forecasting, Kara enjoys gardening, reading, crafting, and exploring the surrounding area. She’s always looking for new places to visit, from restaurants to shops to picnic spots.
