Ever since visiting the Newseum in Washington DC at the age of 14, Colleen Guerry has dreamed of becoming a journalist, and as part of WFXR’s digital content team, that dream has certainly come true.
A southern girl through and through, Colleen grew up in the foothills of the Appalachians in Chattanooga, Tennessee, graduating salutatorian from Baylor School in May 2015 before heading out to Nashville for college.
While Colleen initially attended Vanderbilt University as a pre-med student, she quickly decided to follow her passion for journalism. However, since Vanderbilt did not have a journalism program, Colleen pursued a Communication Studies major and a Theatre minor with an emphasis on acting and directing.
During her time at Vanderbilt, Colleen embraced her love for storytelling and performing by writing for a student-run newspaper, “The Tab;” acting in multiple theatre productions; and serving as the host, co-writer, and co-producer of Vanderbilt Television‘s entertainment news show, “The Scoop.” Colleen also became the recruitment advisor and later president of the Epsilon chapter of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity, as well as co-president of the Delta Psi chapter of Lambda Pi Eta Communications Honor Society.
After Colleen graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Arts in May 2019, she spent her summer working as an intern with Metro Nashville Nashville, shifting from on-camera to behind-the-scenes by learning about filming, editing, and other technical elements of the broadcast industry.
Colleen then moved from Tennessee to Virginia to join WFXR News’ digital team in October 2019 and has loved every moment of it. Every day, she writes and shares a wide variety of stories from across the state and across the country. In addition, she is surrounded by a fantastic team of journalists who not only serve as amazing role models, but also support her goal of becoming a morning news anchor some day.
